Head of AI (fully remote)
Location: Remote / Hybrid (if preferred), HQ in Vienna, Austria
Type: Full-time
About Simple
At Simple, we help companies make sustainability measurable and actionable. Our SaaS platform applies AI to vast amounts of unstructured data to calculate carbon emissions with unmatched accuracy.
We give businesses deep insight into their supply chains so they can measure, manage, and reduce their environmental impact.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a Head of AI to lead the design, development, and evolution of our AI systems. This is a senior, hands-on role for an experienced machine learning leader who has lived through multiple waves of AI innovation — from classical ML and NLP to today’s LLM-powered agentic workflows.
You will set the technical direction for our AI strategy, personally prototype and ship models into production, and eventually guide a growing team. Your work will sit at the core of our platform, driving how companies worldwide understand and act on their emissions data.
Responsibilities
- Build and deploy advanced AI pipelines
- Define and own our AI strategy and roadmap
- Ensure accuracy, verification, and explainability of results
- Continuously identify opportunities to automate human tasks with AI
- Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing AI team
What We’re Looking For
- 7+ years of NLP-focused AI experience (not just LLMs!)
- Hands-on experience building scalable, maintainable LLM-powered applications
- Ability to develop AI pipelines from end to end: prototyping => evals => productionisation
- Startup experience strongly preferred
- Pragmatic, impact-driven mindset: you always pick the right tool for the job
- Educational background in math, physics, computer science, or similar rigorous fields
Skills and Technologies
- Python and a modern data munging, ML and NLP stack (spaCy, scikit-learn, pandas, polars, Hugging Face transformers)
- Machine learning: supervised & unsupervised learning techniques (linear regression, SVMs, tree-based methods, clustering), some experience with PyTorch
- LLMs: Deep understanding of the state of the art – context engineering should be your bread and butter. Building RAG pipelines, embeddings, vector databases, keyword search. Techniques for output validation, uncertainty quantification and detecting mistakes. Building evaluation frameworks.
- Ability to write idiomatic, well-structured Python code
- Experience with GCP/AWS/Azure
- Nice to have: Experience developing web or mobile apps (even as a hobby)
- Nice to have: A statically typed, compiled language – especially a JVM language like Scala or Kotlin (or Java!)
- Nice to have: Experience building high-performance AI teams from scratch
Salary & Benefits
- Competitive salary
- Stock options
- Fully remote, flexible hours
