The Challenge
European fashion and retail brands now report the emissions of their supply chains, and they collect that data from their factories. Every year, garment, textile and knitwear suppliers receive requests for energy use and Scope 1 and 2 emissions, through Higg FEM, CDP or each brand's own supplier portal. Each buyer asks in a slightly different format, and the figures have to match every time. Most factories answer from spreadsheets assembled by the compliance team, with no audit trail behind the numbers. Consultants are expensive, and free calculators produce a figure a buyer cannot check. As brands tighten their supplier requirements, a factory that cannot answer clearly risks losing its place on the approved supplier list.
